Closing the Books
Definition
Closing the books means finalizing the accounting records for a period so no further changes can be made. This locks the period and provides a clean starting point for the next one.
Example
After completing the month-end close for March, the bookkeeper locks the period. Any corrections to March activity must now be made in April or through an adjusting entry.
Why It Matters
Closing prevents accidental changes to a completed period and gives the business confidence that the reported numbers are final.
