Working Papers
Definition
Working papers are the documents, notes, and calculations a bookkeeper uses to support the books. They show how figures were determined and what was reviewed.
Example
During month-end close, the bookkeeper saves the bank reconciliation, a note about an unresolved A/R item, and a depreciation calculation. These are working papers.
Why It Matters
Working papers create an audit trail. They help the bookkeeper — or a successor — understand what was done and why.
